The Kingmaker

Emmy Award-winning director Lauren Greenfield has found a home with Showtime Documentary Films for her forthcoming feature-length documentary The Kingmaker.

The 101-minute film, which enjoys its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival later this month, documents the Marcos family’s political reign in the Philippines and looks to expose the family’s long history of corruption, extravagance and brutality, including Calauit Island, a safari park that favors the well-being of its exotic animals to the detriment of its civilians.

The Kingmaker will center on the political career of Imelda Marcos, the former first lady of the Philippines who divided a nation beginning in 1965, through personal interviews and vérité footage, and details Marcos’s pursuit of reviving authoritarianism in the Philippines at the age of 90.

Following its premiere at Venice, The Kingmaker will continue through the festival circuit in the coming months, followed by a theatrical release this fall and a world television broadcast premiere on Showtime in early 2020.

Stolen Daughters: Kidnapped by Boko Haram

In 2014, 276 Nigerian school girls were kidnapped from a school in Chibok, Northern Nigeria and hidden in the vast Sambisa Forest for three years by Boko Haram, a violent Islamic insurgent movement. A year ago, 82 were released. Stolen Daughters: Kidnapped by Boko Haram tells the story of the girls’ time in captivity and follows their lives over the past year.

Their fate could not be more different than that of thousands of other Nigerian women and girls who have fallen prey to Boko Haram and are known as the “Forgotten Girls.” In the northeastern city of Maiduguri, which has been the site of numerous attacks by Boko Haram and remains extremely volatile, some of the “Forgotten Girls” share deeply disturbing stories of their abduction and treatment at the hands of the terrorist group – and eventual escape from captivity.

Their troubles haven’t ended with their escape from the Sambisa forest, however. With female suicide bombers having killed scores of people in the city, they are often treated with suspicion because of their connection to Boko Haram. “Forgotten Girls” enjoy none of the privileges afforded “The Chibok Girls.” Many live hand-to-mouth in the slums and refugee camps, abandoned by the Nigerian state, but are determined to tell their stories and move forward with their lives, despite the obstacles.

“Whatever has happened to Greece?” wonders filmmaker Håvard Bustnes out loud at the start of this disturbing documentary.

In recent years, its image as a country of sunny beaches and friendly people has been overshadowed by political ideologies that are terrifyingly close to Nazism.

With many prominent members of the far-right Golden Dawn party now behind bars, a daughter, a wife and a mother continue to propagate its message—and all three of them are seasoned enough to avoid any slips of the tongue during interviews.

But while they regularly stop the interview to make sure it went as they want, Bustnes just leaves the camera running.

Some time the film has a vérité-style “point of view” (as when war breaks out in East Ukraine), other times moments are bound in reflection and thoughts about anxiety, fear etc and what goes through Hansen´s mind.

15 MINUTES – THE DVOR MASSACRE

Only a few meters from a Danish UN Camp in Dvor, Croatia, nine disabled people, both Serbs and Croats, were executed in cold blood by a group of unidentified men on August the 8th 1995.

The Danish soldiers in Camp Dannevirke were assigned by the United Nations to monitor the ceasefire between the Serbs and the Croats. They were only allowed to use weapons in self-defense. In the summer of 1995, the Croatian Army ceasefire broke and about 250,000 Serbs were forced to flee during “Operation Storm”.Once there was no longer a ceasefire to monitor, the soldiers were ordered to stay inside their camp and not interfere in the war.

It was therefore up to one Danish officer, to make the crucial decision: to give orders to shoot or follow the UN mandate and not intervene.The film follows the former company commander Kold on his journey back to Croatia, to the place where he 20 years earlier had to make the most difficult decision in his life.

Here he confronts his past and his decision, meets the commanders from the warring parties, and the relatives of the victims. He is forced to face difficult questions: Could he have stopped the massacre? Did he have a choice? Or was he, the Danish soldiers and the civilians actually let down by the United Nations?

The War Show

In March 2011, radio host Obaidah Zytoon and her circle of friends join the street protests against President Bashar al-Assad, as the Arab Spring reaches Syria.

Knowing their country would be changed forever, this group of artists and activists begin filming their lives and the events around them. But as the regime’s violent response spirals the country into a bloody civil war, their hopes for a better future will be tested by violence, imprisonment and death.

Obaidah leaves Damascus and journeys around the country, from her hometown of Zabadani, to the center of the rebellion in Homs, and to northern Syria where she witnesses the rise of extremism.

A deeply personal road movie, the film captures the fate of Syria through the intimate lens of a small circle of friends.

This is largely thanks to one resident – Ivan Glasenberg, CEO of Glencore, whose copper mines in Zambia are not generating a large bounty tax revenue for the Zambians.

Zambia has the 3rd largest copper reserves in the world, but 60% of the population live on less than $1 a day and 80% are unemployed.

Bloody Cartoons is a documentary about how and why 12 drawings in a Danish provincial paper could whirl a small country into a confrontation with Muslims all over the world.

He asks whether respect for Islam combined with the heated response to the cartoons is now leading us towards self-censorship. How tolerant should we be, he wonders, of the intolerant. And what limits should there be, if any, to freedom of speech in a democracy.

‘Isabella – for real’

A film about a girl’s struggle to break away from a childhood with a mentally ill mother. Isabella will soon be 18, but she does not want to grow up. She feels that she has already been grown once.

That’s when she was younger and her mother was seriously ill with a mental illness. At that time Isabella step in and among other things take care of his younger brothers. Now things are more stable at home, therefore, Isabella just like to be young, unwind and have fun.

But it’s hard when she also must take driving license, fit high school and also work in the family’s new Drive-In Cinema, which requires a lot of her. It gives some conflicts with her mother, which she feels strongly attached. Isabella’ll have to secede.

But how detached happens when one’s mother is one’s closest confidants – and mentally ill at the same time?

‘Isabella – for real’ is a strong youth documentary about what it’s like to be a child of a mentally ill parent.

“Diplomacy Vanguard”

Portrays the Foreign Ministry and its initial vanguard of diplomats and advisers who have been sent on a mission to post-war Iraq.

The main character, career diplomat Torben Gettermann, is within a few days been diverted from its peaceful post in Athens for a true baptism of fire as Denmark’s first official representative in Baghdad.

In the middle of a war zone, and in a day completely dominated by the U.S. military, he must try to lay the groundwork for a Danish embassy. He arrives as part of an occupying power, he goes in armored cars, he is surrounded by security guards, while he must try to put a special Danish impact on the chaotic new Iraq.

Every day is a struggle for coherence and meaning in the Danish presence as absolutely small state in the international coalition.

The film follows through seven months Gettermanns stubbornness, doubt, black moments and renewed optimism along with senior officials, under pressure from the opposition and a critical press should drive action at home from the Foreign Ministry in Asian space.

Film attempts to capture the complex field that Overpræsidiets lawyers manager: on the one hand, the interests of the næreste close in a family, namely the child, and on the other hand, the cash law.

How do you handle people who are in deep crisis because of their children and what considerations the basis for refusing access?

What do lawyers to ensure a divorced father that he can see his child to a reasonable extent, what do you do as a lawyer when intuition says something different than what the law immediately imposed in a case?

A heartbreaking sentence hanging back in the air while meeting room emptied again: If you are a family, even if you neither live or talk?
